Jackson County was established in 1825-6 from Lillard Co MO whose name was changed to Lafayette Co that same year). In 1835, Van Buren was est. from Jackson and in 1849, Van Buren's name was changed to Cass. See also:

Notes: Evan Ennis COMBS (s/o Cuthbert & Sarah EVANS Combs, Sr.), b ca 1795, VA; d 18 Jun 1849, Lafayette Co, MO; m (1) 17 Apr 1817, Clark Co, KY, Mary Sidnor HINDE; (2) Susan (N. CATLETT?). The above Susan E. COMBS Matthews and Mary A. COMBS Caldwell were his daughters, and in 1850, Mary (presumably widowed) and her younger siblings James H. and Caroline were (back?) in Montgomery Co, KY. According to The Combs-Prewitt Family Bible, Augustine CALDWELL had the given name Augustus.

Notes: According to the Septimus Scholl letters, John Cuthbert “Cud” and Fielding A. COMBS, Sr., both sons of Dr. Evan Ennis & Mary Sydnor HINDE Combs, Sr., and others left on May 1 of this year for California (The Gold Rush). Neither John C., nor Fielding have been located on the 1850 census, but John C. had returned by 1851 when he married Elizabeth CARTHRAE in Jackson in Jan of that year (see below).

1851 Excerpted from biographical sketch of Silas Evans COMBS by Combs Researcher Michael Wilson from National Historical Company - Cass & Bates County, p. 641: “Ennis COMBS, M.D., was a native of Virginia, and of Scotch-Irish descent, and his mother, formerly Mary S. HINDE, was a Kentuckian by birth, and of English ancestry… In 1842 [Silas] … moved to Missouri and located in Saline County, where he was engaged in farming till 1851, when he went to Jackson County. In 1867 he came to Cass County, Missouri.”

3 Jul 1853 Jackson Co, MO DBT:436. Dr. Edward M. COMBS to Augustus B. CALDWELL, land in Jackson County, Missouri on 3 JUL 1853 (Jackson County, Missouri; Deed Book T, p. 436). A second parcel of land was sold to Nancy Jane BATES in 1868 (Jackson County, Book 56, p. 378).

Notes: Edward Mark COMBS, s/o Evan Ennis, Sr. & Augustus (a.k.a. Augustine?) B. CALDWELL who m Edward's sister, Mary Ann, on 24 Aug 1841 according to the Combs-Prewitt Bible. In 1850, Mary, her three children and younger siblings, James and Caroline, were on the 1850 Montgomery Co, KY census, and Edward M. COMBS was on the 1850 Clark Co, KY census. It may be that Mary's husband was the Dr. CALDWELL who went to CA in May 1849 with her brothers, Fielding and John Cuthbert.

COMBS was the s/o Evan Ennis and Mary Sydnor HINDE Combs, and gs/o Cuthbert & Sarah EVANS Combs, Sr. He was named in the 1848-9 Lafayette Co, MO will of his father, and in 1850 is found in Montgomery Co, KY in the census household of his sister, Mary Ann COMBS Caldwell. According to the Edna F. Hightower Collection, James “married a MARSHALL of Lexington [Fayette Co], Kentucky." Thus far, no connection has been found between James H. and William and Margaret “Peggy" ROBERTS Combs (formerly of Green Co, KY). See also next.
